Event Summary

After ten successful years of assisting over eighty clients to manage their case, complaint and integrity issues Polonious is pleased to announce its inaugural Polonious World conference and user networking event.

We have managed to engage Joseph Pistone aka ‘Donnie Brasco’ as a keynote speaker. Come and hear his story about how he helped to take down the Bonanno crime family in New York city.

To be held on Monday the May 8 at the Grace Hotel located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD featuring speakers from Australia, the USA, and New Zealand. The speakers have a wealth of experience across insurance, banking, education, law enforcement and private investigation. All have in common a drive to achieve professional outcomes with the highest level of integrity.

There will be over 100 guests and 12 speakers during the course of the day to deliver an insightful program packed with informative sessions coming from a range of expertise and industries.

This conference is a must for senior managers who are striving to improve investigation outcomes for clients, customers, students, and victims. The conference presents opportunities to mingle with industry peers while at the same time gather insights into case management issues and solutions in other industries.

Joseph D. Pistone aka 'Donnie Brasco'

In 1976, FBI agent Joe Pistone was given what would become the longest – and likely the most dangerous – undercover assignment in FBI history. Posing as a jewel thief under the alias of Donnie Brasco, Pistone infiltrated two New York Mafia families. He lived in the underworld of organized crime for 6 years. At times he was ordered to perform contract killings; the FBI helped the targets “disappear” to protect his cover. Information obtained by Pistone convicted more than 100 mobsters and helped break such cases as the infamous “Pizza Connection” heroin ring.

When Pistone’s identity finally was revealed, mob chieftains put a $500,000 bounty on his head. Joe Pistone’s personal account of this remarkable experience was chronicled in the 1997 crime drama, “Donnie Brasco” starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino.

Joe spent 27 years as a Special Agent of the FBI and 22 years in the Undercover field. He spent 6 years Undercover in the Mafia as Donnie Brasco. He lectures and teaches Undercover and Organized Crime in too many countries to name.

 

Arthur Katsogiannis, Commander, Fraud and Cyber Crime Squad NSW Police Force.

Arthur has 35 years policing experience predominantly in the area of Criminal Investigation. He was Designated a ‘Detective’ in 1985 working at Darlinghurst, Waverley, Bondi, Fraud Squad, Internal Affairs and Bankstown Detectives. Then promoted to Crime Manager at Marrickville and Flemington Local Area Commands.

In 2001 he was appointed Local Area Commander at Gladesville, then Leichhardt and Burwood Local Area Commands . Arthur was then appointed Commander Strike Force Ennogera a high profile investigation into the reprisal attacks emanating out of the Cronulla riots. He has extensive operational Command experience in a variety of areas, including as a Major Incident Response Team (MIRT) Commander into public disorder, Commander at the Firearms and Organised Crime Squad, Commander Gangs Squad, before being appointed to his current position as Commander, Fraud and Cyber Crime Squad. During his time at the State Crime Command Arthur has also relieved in both the positions of Director, Organised and Serious Crime as well as Assistant Commissioner, Commander, State Crime Command.

Arthur has led many high profile investigations with some of the more recent ones including Strike Force Suburb – The NRL Betting Scandal. Strike Force Kinnara public place shootings involving the Hells Angels and Nomads, outlaw motorcycle gangs. and more recently Strike Force Drawl involving bribery matters of two former CBA executives.

His qualifications include a Master in Public Administration, Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership, Graduate Certificate in Management and an Advanced Diploma in Accounting.

Dan Barrett, Business Improvement Specialist, Performance & Recoveries, Claims Services, IAG NZ

With the continual mission of business being to do ‘more with less’, Dan’s unit at IAG New Zealand took on Polonious as a productivity tool. After 3 years, IAG NZ have managed to improve productivity 47% over the pre-Polonious days.

This is an impressive achievement and one of the highest productivity improvement we’ve seen using Polonious. We were very excited when Dan agreed to share IAG NZ’s journey with the Polonious community.

Dan’s talk will provide you with some excellent takeaways as to how to extract the maximum productivity value that Polonious offers for your Investigation Unit.

He also promises that he will not mention Rugby Union but will talk at length to performance motor sports if you will allow him.

Steve Maronese, National Investigations Manager, Claims, QBE Australia

Steven Maronese began his career with the NSW Police in multiple roles, including the Insurance
Unit of the Fraud Squad, specializing in complex insurance frauds, for example, the GIO Task Force in
the last 1980’s which identified systematic and organised criminal CTP Frauds relating to staged
accidents and exaggerated injuries.

Since leaving the Police in 1995, he has spent the last 22 years investigating or Managing Internal
Investigation Units for 7 Australian Insurers, being AMP General, GIO, Suncorp, NRMA, CommInsure
General Insurance, CommInsure Life Insurance and since January 2017 he became the National
Fraud and Investigations Manager with QBE.

He has had the opportunity of starting 4 Internal Investigations teams from scratch and has
experienced the highs and lows of convincing insurer’s the value of internal investigations teams.

Bill Elliott, CAE Executive Director International Association of Special Investigation Units

Every association has a unique mission that drives them, and my passion is in assisting with the development and implementation of strategy that guides organizations to mission success. Through my experience in governance and strategic planning, I have established a solid track record of overseeing membership and revenue growth both domestically and internationally while increasing the quality and reach of our continuing education programs.

After working in the legislative realm, I began my career in association management working in membership development and sales. It was apparent to me very quickly that my knack for organizing and working with groups of passionate people was the perfect fit for becoming a leader in the association world.

At Association Acumen, the accredited association management company where I am employed, our mission is to guide organizational evolution. I serve as the Executive Director for two successful and growing associations. The Automotive Fleet and Leasing Association is made up of experience leaders in the corporate fleet industry, and we are currently working on a global partnership initiative as our members are continuing to see responsibilities expand across the North American borders. The International Association of Special Investigation Units is made up of insurance fraud investigators from around the world leading the fight against insurance fraud, where were are continuing our focus on building our membership and chapters both within the United States and internationally. Through the two associations I manage, I am responsible for a membership of more than 4,600 individuals and budgets of more than $1.8 million.

Simon Davies, Director of Professional Standards, Australian Province of the Society of Jesus

Simon is the Director of Professional Standards for the Australian Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He oversees all staff & volunteer professional standards and conduct within the Australian Province. Simon leads and directs the development, implementation and maintenance of best practice standards concerning professional conduct with a particular focus on the safety of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Simon is accomplished in undertaking highly sensitive, secret and complex investigations in both the civil and criminal arenas. Bringing experience as a former Australian Federal Police Detective and senior manager within the hospitality industry, Simon’s highly recognised and awarded expertise spans:

We will also discuss ways to improve your operational efficiency with the help of metrics reporting.

Attendees will learn some best practices in reporting and measuring, and will walk away with some valuable examples of reporting and metrics tracking.

Alastair is a business owner and entrepreneur with broad experience in all aspects of investigation management, case management software and analysis tools.

Alastair has direct experience with Law Enforcement, SIU management, Private Investigation and Criminal Investigation specializing in investigation methodology. Interested in improving investigation methodology, reporting and compliance with the use of technology.

Alastair has guided the roll out of the Polonious Investigation Management System to over 50 organizations across the globe with varied business processes and requirements from large insurance carriers to small forensic teams. Each now has a customized solution to meet their needs.

Specialties: Improving investigation processes within Law Enforcement, Insurance Carriers, SIUs and PI companies to realize a greater return on investment.

 

Stuart Guthrie, Co-CEO, Polonious

Stuart has been building businesses since the age of 26. Primarily focusing on IT-related startups, he has launched several successful start ups from the 1989 onwards.

Extensive experience (30 years) in most forms of information technology and their efficient use in companies varying in size from SME to Fortune 100 organisations. These experiences have led to development and marketing of several successful products sold in Asia, Europe, USA and Australia/NZ.

Stuart has a background as a software developer with several open source projects and entire business systems developed solo as well as team leading. Languages include COBOL, PHP, Java, Progress 4GL, Javascript frameworks and Pentaho BI. Whilst software development is not his ‘day job’, it’s still a passion and area of interest. Currently, Microservices and Ember for UX are particularly of interest.
